Late.
Well. I delayed posting about January because I got caught up in a few things, and the not-posting thing just kind of caught me in an inertia loop. And I got sick at the end of January and Rob was sick for like two weeks, and frankly it was just Life that caught up with me and I just haven’t had the time. So. January. Went pretty well, actually. I had one beer the entire month, and that...

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
We all have stories about ourselves, narratives that we’ve repeated so often that we don’t even stop to think if they are true anymore. “I was a shy child,” some people say, or “I was a fat kid” and even if you aren’t shy or fat or whatever anymore, it’s part of you and it’s part of how you see yourself as an adult. My narrative is, “I...

Update on that goals thing
Hey, did you know that not ingesting booze or sweets is HARD? Who knew, right? I’ve been getting up at 5:50 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to hit the gym. It’s the best time for me because by the time I’m done and get home, the baby is awake and we can start our days. Maybe this is a common working mother thing, but I always feel like I want to squeeze out as much time...

goals for 2010
I’ve never been much of a goal setter. I tend to set high, lofty goals for myself that are too vague or too general for me to say whether or not I succeed. “Go to the gym” and “lose weight” are pretty open-ended, you know? But this year I want to do something different, and I intend to keep it public(ish) to keep me honest. I turn 30 at the end of this month and...

year in review: because everybody's doing it
1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before? Had a baby. 2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don’t recall making any New Year’s resolutions last year; I was probably too tired from being pregnant. I will make some for this year - getting in shape, continuing to be a better mama and wife, kicking ass at work and...

Bubblegum
Last Friday, I took a sick, feverish baby to the doctor, only to learn she has an ear infection in her right ear. It might sound weird but I was actually relieved she did have one — it meant there was medication the doctor could give me instead of just shrugging and saying, “Well, I guess she just has a virus she needs to get over!” The amoxicillin comes as a bubblegum-flavored...

O hai
I like to blog, I just… don’t, I guess. Maybe I think my life really isn’t that interesting? But in any case, I’ve decided to write again. I don’t know about what - maybe some of my craft projects, or about my baby, or what, but I’m just going to use this space to be a little creative.

I have decided
I am going to wear maternity pants for as long as is acceptably possible. It’s like wearing sweatpants only you actually look nice and not schluby. It’s like when Homer goes to clown college and marvels over what are supposed to be ridiculously large pants. Krusty: OK, we’ll start off with the baggy — wha? [sees Homer] Those are supposed to be baggy pants. Baggy!...

I totally love the song Pink Elephants on Parade from Dumbo, but the video is still able to freak me out at age 28.

This is awesome
The Finnish Men’s Shouting Choir! This is really cool. It’s the kind of thing, as a print journliast, that makes me envy my fellows in broadcast just a little bit. Sure, I could record the choir and slap it up on our Web site, but it’s really difficult to convey just how they sound in print.

Robert Reich's blog →
Came across this yesterday. I like how the man thinks - his solutions and ideas are very clear and easy to understand for the total financial n00b like myself. His most recent post, What Wall Street Should Be Required to Do, to Get a Blank Check From Taxpayers, is quite good. Here’s an excerpt: The public doesn’t like a blank check. They think this whole bailout idea is nuts. They see fat...

I like to torture myself
Yesterday while Rob was at the BC Football game I decided to start working on knitting him the socks I promised I would make him like six months ago (the design has Pac-Man on it. Yes, I am an awesome wife). Flipped on the TiVo and for some bizarre reason decided to watch an episode of “House” where a pregnant woman gets cancer and dies so her baby can live. Umm. Maybe not the best...

social media
Last night I went to a social media meetup (or “Tweet-up,” if you want to get cute) facilitated by Ken George at WBUR, Boston’s NPR station. (Ken also maintains the The Converstation blog as well). Anyway, I am usually too terrified to go to these events alone but I decided to sack up and go. The discussion about Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media, and how to...

skank indeed
I cannot stop reading about the so-called Rockefeller guy. I mean, I really can’t stop! Every day there is something new and salacious. Today we find his living relatives! Tomorrow… what next? He has more wives stashed somewhere? He’s connected with another killing? It could be anything! Why must you hold me back, time?! I kind of hate that I am obsessed with this story, because...

everybody is coughing, and nobody has any money
This comment on MetaFilter has me totally rolling. Four years down the drain because my BA in English Lit. can be pretty much summed up thusly: Applemeat, English major, sums up 19th century literature for you: A guy’s upset because his sister’s not a virgin anymore; somebody gets run over by a buggy; everybody is coughing, and nobody has any money. posted by applemeat at 2:34 PM on...

Happy birthday, Beatrix Potter
I learned from Google’s adorable illustration of Peter Rabbit that today is Beatrix Potter’s birthday. She would have been 142 today. I freaking love Beatrix Potter, although admittedly I haven’t read any of her books since I was little. And speaking of Beatrix Potter, this cartoon from PBF is all kinds of funny, too.

Dear Parents, Please Relax, It's Just Camp
from the NYTimes. Please, let me never, ever be like this. Especially like this!!: He and others said parents also frequently send children away without packing their prescribed medication for attention deficits or psychological problems — and without letting camp staff know.

Who killed Chandra Levy?
There are a lot of criticisms coming from the series the Washington Post has up on Chandra Levy. Common among them are - why are you spending so much time on a rich, white girl’s murder? Didn’t we all agree after 9/11 this stuff was too much in the media? Why isn’t the WP covering more important topics, like how black men in the District are getting murdered and are too much into...

I have decided today
I dislike people who slow down at railroad crossings. I am sure it is just for safety reasons, but it makes me nervous that they’re going so slowly and then maybe I’m the one who will get caught on the tracks when the train comes. I want to go over those tracks as quickly as possible to reduce the possibility of a train hitting me.

Firefox woes
Is anyone else having trouble with Firefox 3.0 using Windows XP? I installed it on my work computer and it seems to crash at least four times a day. I do not have this problem on my Mac Power Book.

I love Gene Weingarten
From the intro to his chat today: Do you remember Michael Savage, the poisonous right-wing radio talk show host whom I reported about in my piece on 24-hour punditry? Michael is back in the news for expressing the opinion, on the air, that “99 percent” of all children diagnosed with autism are “brats” who haven’t been told to “cut the act out.” He said:...
